There comes a time to every soul when the sun seems to set at midday and darkness surrounds.

This is the Valley of Shadow, the trial of trials, when hope is tested and faith refined.

It may come as the loss of one dearly beloved, or the shattering of a lifelong dream. It may come as a prolonged loneliness or a night of doubt and despair. In such a valley, you may say, “Where is God? I cannot feel His presence.” Yet know that even if you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you need fear no evil, for the Eternal is with you, though unseen.

Imagine the traveler in the desert night. The moon is covered by cloud, the stars hidden; he can barely see the path at his feet. But he presses on, remembering the map in his heart and trusting that dawn will come. So must we walk by faith and not by sight in our darkest hours. When you cannot see the hand of God, trust His heart. He has promised never to forsake you. The Teacher is often quiet during the test, but present nonetheless.

When grief envelops you, pour out your tears and sorrow openly. Do not bottle your pain within as if you must be strong before God. The Almighty knows our frame, that we are but dust; He invites the weary to cry out. Did not Job in his agony raise his voice, and was he condemned for it? No, for in his questioning he still sought God. Did not even the Holy One on the cross cry, “Why have You forsaken me?” showing that to feel forsaken is not the same as to be forsaken.

Therefore, bring every doubt, fear, and grief to the Divine in prayer. Better an honest wrestling with God than a cold distance in false piety. Jacob wrestled through the night and at daybreak was blessed. So wrestle if you must, but hold on, and you too will find a blessing as dawn breaks on your struggle.

In the valley of darkness, listen for the still small voice. It may not be in the whirlwind of emotion, nor the earthquake of circumstances, nor the fire of anguish, but in a gentle whisper that follows. A quiet assurance, a subtle providence, a verse remembered, or a friend’s unexpected comfort — these are the rod and staff that will comfort you, signs that the Shepherd is indeed walking beside you.

Consider the sojourn of the soul through the Duat, as the Egyptians described the night journey of the sun and the testing of the spirit in the realm of shadows. The soul faced gates and watchers, serpents and trials, and had to speak words of truth to pass through. This myth contains a truth: in our dark nights, we too face inner demons and fears that must be confronted with truth.

Cling to truth as your torch in the darkness. The truth that the Almighty is good, that your life has purpose, that love is stronger than death. These truths are your spells of passage. Speak them against the lies that assail you in the night: the lie that you are alone, the lie that despair is final, the lie that joy will not return. Answer lies with truth, and they will lose their power.

Often in these dark valleys, one learns the most precious lessons. In daylight we see the world; in darkness we see the stars. So in prosperity we see God’s blessings, but in adversity we see God’s heart. He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. When all is stripped away, we come to Him as we truly are, and find He is all we truly need.

Pain can purify like fire, burning away illusions and selfishness. Sorrow can carve out a deeper capacity for compassion, as one who has walked in darkness understands and guides others who wander there. Do not waste your suffering; let it be forged into empathy and wisdom.

If your valley is one of temptation — a darkness of moral struggle — remember that no one is tempted beyond what they can bear with God’s help. Even if you stumble, reach again for the Almighty’s hand. There is no pit so deep that His mercy is not deeper still. Even in failure, you can find the seeds of victory if humility and resolve are born from it.

The righteous falls seven times and rises again, by the grace of God. It is not never falling that marks the saints, but rising one time more than they fell. So rise, pilgrim, even if shakily, and continue the journey.

When death itself casts its shadow, and you or a loved one approach the end of days under the sun, take courage in the promise that death is but a doorway. The grief of parting is real and grievous — even the Lord wept at the tomb of His friend — yet beyond the veil is a morning beyond mornings. The sun sets, and we mourn the fading light, but it will rise again in glory not long hence.

Trust that those who go before us in faith and love are greeted by the Divine in a place where every tear is wiped away. Their journey through the night is complete; they have stepped into an everlasting day. This hope does not remove the sting of loss, but it salves it with meaning and expectation of reunion.

Thus, in every shadowed valley, hold to hope. Engrave on the tablets of your heart: “This too shall pass.” The night will yield to dawn; the seed will break forth from the soil; the cocoon will open to a bright-winged life.

Nothing is impossible or final to the Eternal One. He can turn mourning into dancing, and clothe the sackcloth of despair with garments of praise. The very valley of death can become a pathway to resurrection.

You will not stay a moment longer in darkness than is needful for your soul’s growth and God’s purpose. Dawn will not tarry beyond the appointed time. So keep oil in your lamp by prayer and trust, even if it is the trust of a mustard seed. One tiny spark of faith can start a new blaze of light.

When you emerge from the valley, as surely you will, give thanks to the One who sustained you. Mark the lessons learned on stones of remembrance, that you may never forget His faithfulness in the dark. These memorials will strengthen you for future trials and shine as encouragement to others.

And even while you remain in the valley, know that you are never truly alone. The fellowship of all who suffer is with you, and the compassion of the Almighty surrounds you, closer than your breath.

Step by step, though it be through shadows, continue onward. For beyond every darkness awaits the unfailing dawn.
