As a mother gazes with tenderness upon her newborn, or as the Nile floods the fields bringing life to the barren soil, so is compassion in the heart — a wellspring of life to others.

The Almighty One is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. In His image were you created, so to mercy and love you are also called.

When your brother or sister stumbles, do not rejoice or turn away. Bend and help them rise, for someday you too will need a steady hand. The one who shows mercy to the fallen reflects the very face of God.

Carry each other’s burdens in the spirit of love: for what weight is too heavy when many lift together? Even the great stones of the pyramids were set in place by countless caring hands. So too, the great sorrows of life are made bearable by shared compassion.

Beware the cold heart that refuses to forgive. Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal to throw at another — in the end you are the one burned.

If one offends you, seek understanding before wrath. Answer anger with gentleness, and you will pour water on the flames. Answer cruelty with kindness, and you will disarm the cruel. This is the way of the righteous: to conquer hatred with love, just as light drives out the darkness.

Do not say, “I will love my friend but hate my enemy.” Every person bears the Divine image. If you only love those who love you, what virtue is there in that? The sun shines upon the righteous and unrighteous alike, and the rain falls on the fields of the just and the unjust.

Be therefore like the sun: radiate compassion indiscriminately. Let your heart be as open as the sky above, which shelters all creatures beneath it.

When you see the hungry, share your bread. When you meet the stranger, offer shelter and warmth. For was it not said in days of old that in welcoming the stranger, some have entertained angels unawares?

The compassionate heart never loses by giving. Charity is a treasure that neither rust consumes nor thief steals, a storehouse inexhaustible in the heavens.

Mercy also extends to yourself. Do not be overly harsh in judgment of your own mistakes. As the Eternal forgives, forgiving your repentant heart again and again, so you must learn to forgive yourself and rise back up. Guilt that leads to growth is a gift; but guilt that drowns the soul in despair is a chain to cast off. The Almighty’s mercy is new every morning, like the dew upon the grass at dawn — take solace in that renewal.

In showing mercy, you imitate the Divine Healer. Your hands become His hands, wiping away tears and binding up wounds. Each act of kindness is like a star lighting up the sky of someone’s darkness.

And though you may not see the results, no kindness is ever wasted. Even if gratitude is not given, the act of love has a multiplier effect which shapes eternity.

Walk the path of compassion and mercy, and you shall find your own heart sustained. As you refresh others, so shall you be refreshed. The merciful will receive mercy, and those who show love will know love in abundant measure.

This path is not always easy — it may lead you to cross valleys of sacrifice — yet its end is a field of peace, where all wounds are healed under the gentle light of the Eternal Love.
