The Counsel of Patience and Peace
Everything under heaven has an appointed hour. Rushing fate is like pushing the Nile — futile and foolish.
Everything under heaven has an appointed hour. Rushing fate is like pushing the Nile — futile and foolish. Be still and trust in the timing of the Almighty.
When storms of trouble gather, guard your heart with patience. Do not let fear drive you to desperate haste or anger drive you to reckless words. As a sailor waits out the squall with his sails secured, wait out your anger and sorrow, secure in faith. The storm will pass, and a calm will follow, for no night is endless, nor any tempest eternal.
Patience is the companion of wisdom. The impatient speak before they know, act before they understand, and thus invite misfortune. But the patient soul observes, prays, and discerns the right moment.
Recall the proverb: “Better is the end of a matter than its beginning; better a patient spirit than a proud spirit.” Just as clay must be tempered by time and fire to become strong pottery, so our character is tempered by waiting and enduring.
Anger dwells in the bosom of fools. If provoked, do not answer immediately while your heart rages. Take a deep breath and hold your peace. Words spoken in fury are like arrows loosed without aim — they wound randomly and often deeply regret follows.
Instead, answer softly, or not at all until your spirit is calm. By postponing your reaction, you master it. This is not weakness but strength under control — like a lion that chooses not to roar at every provocation.
When a brother wrongs you, strive first to understand, then to correct with gentleness. Perhaps he spoke in ignorance or acted in fear. A gentle reply can break the cycle of anger, whereas vengeance fuels it like oil on fire.
Do you feel slighted or insulted? Consider if any truth hides in the sting to better yourself; if none, let it blow away as chaff on the wind. Why carry hurtful words in your heart? Patience lets them pass over you, and peace preserves your joy.
Envy and frustration often come from comparing your journey to another’s. Do not measure your harvest by your neighbor’s field. Some fields yield early in the season, others later, yet all can be full by the final gathering. Trust that your season will come. Rejoice in others’ blessings, and be patient for your own. The Almighty writes each life story in His perfect wisdom — do not attempt to snatch the pen from His hand.
There is a tale of a stonecutter who grew tired of cutting stones and prayed for a different life. He saw a rich man and wished to be rich; he became the rich man. Then he saw a great prince and wished to rule; he became the prince. He saw the sun and wished to shine; he became the sun.
Then a cloud blocked him, so he wished to be the cloud. As a cloud he blocked the sun, but then the wind carried him away, so he wished to be the wind. As the wind he blew mighty, until he met a mountain that stopped him. So he wished to be the mountain. As the mountain he stood strong—until a stonecutter came and chipped away at him. He realized the stonecutter’s humble life was best and wished to return.
In time the man awoke as himself again, wiser. He learned to be at peace with his place and patient in his striving, rather than constantly envying and rushing to become something else.
Therefore be content in waiting, and make peace with the present moment. Patience is not mere passing of time, but a quiet growing — like a seed hidden in the earth, silently preparing to break forth.
In patience, there is profound strength. It is the root of faith, for to be patient is to trust that the Divine Plan unfolds as it should. They who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.
Seek peace and pursue it. Let go of grudges quickly, for they are thorns in your own heart.
Blessed are the peacemakers, those who sow harmony — they shall reap joy.
Better a humble cottage where peace reigns than a grand palace filled with strife. What good is wealth or achievement if your spirit is in turmoil? Peace in the soul is the greatest prosperity.
Patience and peace walk hand in hand. The patient cultivate peace within, and the peaceable find it easier to be patient with others. In quietness and trust shall be your strength.
Though the world around may rage like an angry sea, keep the sanctuary of your heart calm. In due season the tides will recede, and you will emerge intact, having trusted in the unshakeable Rock of Ages who stands firm above the storm.
