Money & work · A BOOK PROPOSAL
Insurance, climate risk, and the changing cost of staying put
This proposed book would make the financial side of climate exposure understandable at the household and community level. It would follow risk through insurance premiums, exclusions, rebuilding costs, lending, and local public budgets. Readers would learn which questions to ask when comparing places and policies, why historical prices can miss future pressures, and how private insurance and public backstops distribute losses. The focus would be informed judgment about uncertainty, without pretending any location is risk free.
A January 2025 U.S. Treasury report found higher premiums and nonrenewal rates in ZIP codes with greater expected losses from climate-related hazards, using 2018–2022 data. Its findings connect physical risk with the cost and availability of homeowners insurance.
