Reader Tools and Practices
The tools below condense the manuscript into repeatable practices. They are deliberately simple.
The tools below condense the manuscript into repeatable practices. They are deliberately simple. Their power lies not in novelty but in repeated use at the right moments.
| Tool | Purpose | Core prompt | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Machinery Inventory | Surface recurring triggers | What makes me perform, shrink, exaggerate, appease, or attack? | Start of the process; monthly review |
| Pre-Speech Scan | Catch state before language | What is my body doing? What am I protecting? | Before difficult conversations |
| Four-Part Presence Cue | Gather coherence quickly | Feet. Breath. Eyes. Aim. | Before meetings, presentations, conflict |
| Story / Evidence Split | Separate interpretation from fact | What is the story? What do I actually know? | Emotionally loaded judgments |
| Base Rate Before Story | Correct narrative seduction | What usually happens in situations like this? | Forecasts, hiring, investing, relationship assumptions |
| Probability Translation | Reduce false certainty | Is this 1 in 5, 50/50, 70 percent, or 90 percent? | Decisions under uncertainty |
| Ten-Second Sovereignty Drill | Interrupt reflex | Delay ten seconds before reacting | Texts, purchases, agreements, criticism |
| Listening Loop | Increase influence through clarity | Hear. Summarize. Confirm. Respond. | Meetings, partnerships, coaching, conflict |
| Point–Reason–Example–Ask | Make speech usable | What do I mean, why, what shows it, what next? | Briefs, meetings, proposals |
| Default Installation Card | Build automaticity deliberately | When X happens, I will do Y | Any habit under pressure |
| Will Review | Strengthen the witnessing self | What moved me? What did I choose? | End of day or end of week |
The ODNI’s analytic standards are instructive for the probability tool because they explicitly require analysts to express uncertainty and likelihood clearly rather than relying on vague suggestion. The practical lesson for readers is to translate fuzzy confidence into ranges that can later be revised and tested. (ODNI 2015).
Worksheet Set
Machinery Inventory
Complete each sentence quickly and without interpretation.
The situations most likely to make me perform are ______. The situations most likely to make me shrink are ______. Praise is most dangerous for me when ______. Criticism is most destabilizing for me when ______. I over-explain when ______. I become aggressive when ______. I go vague when ______. I become theatrical when ______. The fear that most often chooses for me is ______.
Pre-Speech Scan
Use on a notecard, in a notes app, or mentally.
What is my body doing right now? What outcome am I trying to force? What am I afraid this moment says about me? What would truth say? What would fear say? What sentence would remain if performance were removed?
Story / Evidence Split
Draw two columns and write fast.
Story: What my mind says this means.
Evidence: What I directly know, observed, verified, or heard unambiguously.
Then add:
Base rate: Alternative explanations: Probability estimate: Next action that preserves power:
Default Installation Card
When ______ happens, I will ______, because I am becoming the kind of person who ______. I will reinforce it by ______.
Will Review
What moved me today? What did I choose consciously? Where was I governed by old story? Where did a default help me? Where did I perform? Where did I influence cleanly? What needs installation next?
