Power & society · A BOOK PROPOSAL

YOU’RE FREE TO AGREE

Power, Speech, and the Price of Dissent

A proposed inquiry into the rules and relationships that shape speech in governments, workplaces, universities, platforms, and social groups. The book would distinguish constitutional protections from contractual rules, professional standards, and informal social consequences. It would examine disputes over access and moderation through the stated reasons of the institutions involved, the claims of affected speakers, and the applicable evidence and law. Readers would gain a vocabulary for separating criticism, disagreement, exclusion, retaliation, and censorship without treating those terms as interchangeable. Legal outcomes would be described case by case, including the limits of what a pending dispute can establish.

The idea behind the book +

Reuters reported on September 21, 2026 that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed suit challenging their exclusion from White House grounds. The dispute raises questions about government-controlled press access and constitutional protections. This proposed book would place that dispute alongside other institutional settings while keeping government restrictions, private rules, and social disagreement legally distinct. A lawsuit’s allegations are not a final judicial determination.
