Bad Bunny: Your Island Is Not for Sale
Music, Money, and the Fight to Keep Your Home
Bad Bunny made the fear of losing home audible far beyond Puerto Rico. Beginning with his song “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii,” this proposed book asks what happens when a place becomes famous while the people who made it home struggle to stay. It follows housing costs, short-term rentals, land ownership, investor incentives, and the way tourism income moves through an island. Puerto Rico is the anchor; Saint Lucia and other Caribbean islands offer comparisons with their own histories and choices. The book would listen to residents and artists, test economic claims against evidence, and explore ways a place can welcome the world while helping its people remain and prosper. An independent exploration by Kevin L. Michel.

The idea behind the book +
On September 23, 2026, Lula’s campaign posted a Brazilian adaptation of Bad Bunny’s “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii”; September 24 reporting said the artist’s team authorized the campaign’s use of the music. Permission to use a song does not establish a personal endorsement of Lula. The moment shows how a warning rooted in Puerto Rico can resonate elsewhere. This proposal begins with the artist’s own words about visitors and residents, then examines land, housing, tourism, and policy with evidence rather than assuming any single cause of displacement.
