Prologue Free opening Prologue Night had settled warm and thick over the countryside of Campania. In the distance, beyond dark rows of vineyards, a constellation of bonfires flickered outside the town walls of Pompeii. Section Free opening Part I: Maker and his Mark In the months before that final summer, Lucius Herennius Florus had devoted much care and thought to the creation of his bronze seal – the very object that would carry his name beyond his own lifetime.

Section Member The Clay Tablet Mesopotamia, c. 1800 BCE. A scribe named Arad-Ea sits cross-legged on the floor of a dimly lit mud-brick office in the city of Mari. Section Member Part II: Signals and Belief Lucius Herennius Florus often reflected that a seal or signature, no matter how finely made, ultimately derived its power from a collective faith.

Section Member Interlude II: The Stonemason’s Mark France, 13th century. High on the scaffolding of a half-built cathedral, a master stonemason named Géraud chips patiently at a block of limestone. Why does the caduceus on Florus's seal matter?
