Prologue Free opening Prologue The Kitakami River swirled in the dusk light, its current catching on a half-submerged stone to form a small eddy. Opening Free opening Cucumber Seed Oath Sunrise found Jūbei already at work in his field. A thin mist clung to the furrows, dew glinting on new grass. Section Member Murmurs As late spring melted into early summer, the village of Kōgoe thrummed with its usual agrarian rhythms. Section Member Envy's Imitation The turning of the season from autumn to winter did little to quell the whispers around Kōgoe. Section Member Blight and Ransom The storm that struck Kōgoe in the wake of the copied seals was fierce and unrelenting. Section Member Whirlpool Shrine Night had fully fallen by the time the villagers dispersed from the riverbank. Though relief had washed over the community, Endō Jūbei lingered under the old willow, unable to yet depart. Section Member Covenant Spring came fully to the village of Kōgoe, bringing clear skies and gentle breezes. Epilogue Member Crowless Fields Years later, when cherry trees bloom and the river runs clear with snowmelt, the people of Kōgoe still tell the tale of the season their fields went silent and crowless.

Why does Jubei's bow work when brute force would have failed?

The bow works because Jubei understands the old rule before he understands the creature. A kappa may be dangerous, but it is also bound by courtesy. The lesson is not that manners are magic. It is that some powers can be met only through the protocol they recognize.
