Part I - The Clock
Chapter 1 The Rim of Cities I stood inside a clock large enough to contain weather. The metal was warm beneath my shoes. Chapter 2 The Snake Through the Fence The snake moved through a narrow fence that had not been there a moment before. It was a plain fence, waist high, made of weathered boards. Chapter 3 The Wake I stood on the deck of a ship crossing a black ocean. No stars showed.

Part II - The Factory
Chapter 4 The Floor That Moved The floor moved beneath me in long black strips. The factory had aisles like a church. Chapter 5 The Office Above the Hands The staircase to the glass office had no railings. Each step was labeled with a virtue: merit, efficiency, discipline, loyalty, growth, realism. Chapter 6 The Four Separations I found the carpenter in a room filled with doors. He built them beautifully. Chapter 7 The Machine That Learned to Optimize The machine occupied a hall of its own. It had no single shape.

Part III - The Tank and the City
Chapter 8 The Steppe The tank crossed the steppe under a sky too large for mercy. There was no factory now, unless the tank itself was the factory, and perhaps it was. Chapter 9 The City That Was Already Burning The city was white before it was fire. That was what struck me first. Chapter 10 The River on Fire I reached the river carrying a shoe that did not belong to me. It was small, brown, scuffed at the toe. Chapter 11 Rats' War The house had once been yellow. I knew because a strip of paint survived behind a stove. Chapter 12 The Kitchen Chair The artillery observer sat on the chair as if attending a lecture. In the city, nothing remained only itself. Chapter 13 The Girl at the Gun The gun stood in the open, angled toward a sky full of machines. Its crew were girls. Chapter 14 Time Is Blood A clock hung on the wall of a ruined school. Its face was cracked.

Chapter 15 The Classroom Without a Roof The classroom had no roof, but snow fell politely. Chapter 16 The Examination of Obedience The door opened into another classroom, identical except that every desk had straps. Students sat with wrists fastened. Chapter 17 The Hammer The teacher placed the hammer on the desk. No one touched it. Chapter 18 The Infinite Library The library had no center. Shelves climbed into cloud.

Part V - The Screen
Chapter 19 The Screen Was Not a Window The screen showed everything. Chapter 20 The Cathedral of Common Sense The cathedral was full. Not with worshipers exactly, though everyone knelt. Chapter 21 The Audience Commodity The auctioneer had a voice made of polished wood. “Lot twentyseven,” he called. Chapter 22 The Museum of Good Intentions Every empire had its own room. The first room was painted rose and gold.

Part VI - The Supermarket
Chapter 23 The Aisle of Freedom The supermarket was open at midnight. The aisle was named FREEDOM in red letters suspended from the ceiling. Chapter 24 The Pharmacy of Despair At the back of the supermarket, the pharmacy had stainedglass windows. Chapter 25 The Robot at Checkout The robot stood in lane seven. It was sleek, white, jointed, efficient, and innocent in the awful way machines can be innocent.

Part VII - The Court and the Hand
Chapter 26 The Court of Those Who Paid The court was circular and roofless. No bench stood above us. Chapter 27 The Trial of the Machine The machine was smaller in the court. Or perhaps the court was larger than the factory had been. Chapter 28 The Tank-Tree The tank entered as it had crossed the steppe: heavy, certain, crowned with a gun. Everyone moved back except the dead. Chapter 29 The Clock Again The cities remained around the rim. Berlin, Moscow, Stalingrad, Manchester, Detroit, Shenzhen, Washington, the unfinished city of glass. Chapter 30 Now It did not move clockwise. It moved outward.
