After the Job

Finding your place when AI changes the rules

By Kevin L. MichelComplete research draft

A note before we begin

The workers, households and conversations used to illustrate choices in this book are imagined. They are not interviews or events from my life. The poems also use imagined speakers. Research findings are identified in the source notes, along with the limits that matter to the argument. The practical examples are invitations to think through your own circumstances; they do not promise a job, an income or a particular outcome. This is a complete research draft, open to correction and further development.

The complete research draft is available here to read online. It remains open to revision; commissioning supports the finished, edited PDF edition.

Updated October 2, 2026. The finished, edited PDF edition is offered separately on the book details page.

Contents

  1. When the Work Changes Before the Job Ends

Begin with the changes in an actual working day, and separate what a tool can do from what an employer will do and what happens to a person.

  2. Keep the Essentials Covered

A work transition starts with the means to live and the time to make a decision, not a demand to discover a new purpose under pressure.

  3. What the Job Gave You

A job can hold income, a daily rhythm, recognition, company, and a say in what happens. Seeing these separately makes it easier to decide what to rebuild and what to leave behind.

  4. A Place to Belong Without a Job Title

Losing a role can change how other people see you and where you feel welcome. Belonging grows stronger when relationships and membership can survive changes in income, title, and ability to contribute.

  5. Learning When Answers Are Cheap

Learn to use new tools while keeping sight of the ability you are trying to build, the judgment a task requires and the evidence that you can do the work.

  6. What Your Saved Time Is For

Fewer paid hours become freedom only when income, care, access and control over the day make the time usable.

  7. Build an Option You Can Use

Test a possible route against real demand, entry requirements and household limits before making it carry your whole future.

  8. A Transition Should Not Be a Private Burden

Employers, public institutions and shared ownership can give people a real way through change instead of sending them away with advice.

  9. Your Next Ninety Days

Use a flexible planning period to protect essentials, learn from the actual work and test a usable route without making a deadline into a judgment on yourself.

  10. A Life You Have a Say In

The point of a more capable economy is a better range of human lives, with security, shared gains and room to decide what deserves our time.
